Alcohol-Related Sickness Causes Absence from Work
An astounding 17 million working days are lost to alcohol-related sickness each year, furthermore there is a total annual alcohol-related output loss to the UK economy of up to £6.4 billion. According to the government’s Know Your Limits Survey an office drinking culture could be partly responsible as many workers fell pressured to drink by colleagues.
The NHS is calling for businesses' support to help combat sickness by actively promoting the NHS drinking guidelines and recommendations at work. The NHS recommends that men should not regularly drink more that 3-4 units a day and women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day. ‘Regularly’ means every day or most days of the week.
